In this post, we present a brief overview of our recently published book chapter titled “Evaluation of α-Amylase Inhibitory Activity of Aqueous Extracts of Selected Plants”

This study demonstrated the antidiabetic potential of aqueous extracts of Momordica charantia, Musa paradisiaca and Emblica officinalis. Momordica charantia exhibited significantly high alpha-amylase inhibitory activity compared to Metformin and other plant extracts. This study supports the traditional use of the plant juices, Momordica charantia and Musa paradisiaca, for controlling blood sugar. These plants are rich in bioactive compounds like glycosides, alkaloids, terpenoids, and flavonoids, which offer therapeutic promise for managing diabetes mellitus and reducing oxidative stress. Further research is necessary to identify the active compounds and elucidate the precise mechanisms of action, potentially leading to a novel antidiabetic drug.
